Cylindrical batteries are the most popular Panasonic rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. High density of energy and high voltage (3.6V/3.7V) result in relatively small battery dimensions. These rechargeable batteries deliver long lifetimes, a wide range of operating currents and low self-discharge rates. The cells are designed with user safety in mind, they include internal safeguards in the form of a fuse, pressure isolating switch and a separator layer resistant to increased temperatures inside the cell. When constructing rechargeable batteries from lithium-ion cells it is necessary to use an electronic plate to protect the cells against overcharging, excessively deep discharges, short circuits and high temperatures, all of which can damage the rechargeable battery causing a fire or explosion.
